New Perspectives: Postgraduate Symposium for the Humanities (NPPSH) is a new, annual research symposium, hosted in 2016 by Maynooth University, that will bring together postgraduate students from across Ireland to share, discuss, and explore the ways in which we are rethinking and re-examining humanities research. Designed and organised by postgraduate students, for postgraduate students, our objective is to highlight the diverse and varied scope and depth of Irish postgraduate humanities research, especially research that illuminates collaborations between disciplines and the role of the humanities in the 21st century.
This inaugural symposium will coincide with Maynooth University’s Annual Dean’s Lecture on 13 and 14 October 2016. This year’s lecture will feature Sidonie Smith, Mary Fair Croushore Professor of the Humanities and Director of the Institute for the Humanities at the University of Michigan. The New Perspectives symposium will be hosted by An Foras Feasa, Maynooth University’s Humanities Research Institute.
Call for Proposals:
NPPSH 2016 will feature papers and posters from a cross-section of postgraduate students and researchers across Ireland. NPPSH is currently seeking abstracts for short papers (≈ 10 minutes), long papers (≈ 20 minutes), and posters (size A0 portrait) that highlight the different ways in which humanities researchers collaborate, between themselves and with other disciplines. While all humanities postgraduates are encouraged to submit a proposal, areas of particular interest include:
– Research that highlights marginalised and/or emerging voices
– The role of the humanities in the 21st century and/or a STEM world
– How the humanities influence research and education outside of the discipline
– The impact of humanities research on private industry
Abstracts should be no more than 500 words. Students will also be asked to submit a short biography of no more than 100 words. All proposals will be peer-reviewed and evaluated by Humanities faculty at Maynooth University. We welcome submissions from PhD candidates, Research Master’s students, and Taught Master’s students. Students working in a non-humanities field who are conducting research with potential impact on the humanities are also encouraged to submit.
All papers and posters accepted for NPPSH will be published and distributed in journal-format after the symposium. The journal will be edited and peer-reviewed prior to publication by the NPPSH Review Committee and will be openly accessible to NPPSH presenters and attendees through the website. Specific details and guidelines for journal publication will be circulated to presenters at a later date.
Proposals must be received by NPPSH by 5 PM on Monday 30 May 2016. Submissions will only be accepted via the submission form on our website. The NPPSH Organising Committee will provide access to technology for the purposes of paper presentations.
