Galaxy – Digital Research Methods Training online

We would like to draw your attention to the Galaxy Training Academy 2026, a free, international training programme focused on open, reproducible digital research methods, with particular relevance for arts, humanities, and cultural heritage research.

This training is relevant if you:

• work with textual, audiovisual, or cultural heritage data;

• are interested in practical approaches to digital humanities, text analysis, or machine learning;

• would like access to shared, non‑commercial computational infrastructure for research and teaching experiments;

• are interested in FAIR research practices for the digital arts and humanities.

About the Galaxy Training Academy 2026

The Academy is organised by the Galaxy Training Network, a long‑running international community that develops and delivers training for the Galaxy open‑source research infrastructure, which is widely used and supported across the global research community.

Dates: 18–22 May 2026 (Registration deadline: 16 May)

Format: Fully asynchronous (no live sessions)

The Academy is open to researchers at all career stages, including postgraduate students, doctoral researchers and early‑career academics. 

Participants work through a structured set of video‑based and text‑based tutorials at their own pace. No prior experience with Galaxy is required, although more experienced users are also welcome.

Topics

Recommended tracks for community members include: Digital Humanities; From Zero to Hero with Python Machine Learning.

Indicative topics in the Digital Humanities track include:

• Introduction to Digital Humanities workflows in Galaxy

DRI Reproductive Justice Hackathon [Mar 7 @ 12:30, in person, Dublin]

DRI Reproductive Justice Hackathon

When: March 7th from 12:30-16:00

Where: Dublin City Library and Archive

Join the Digital Repository of Ireland for a collective day of action to expand access to, and knowledge of, the history of reproductive justice efforts in Ireland through updates to the Reproductive Justice topic area on Wikipedia.

This is a half day, in-person event to take place at Dublin City Library and Archive on Saturday, March 7th. Participants should have access to a laptop or connected device on which they are comfortable editing text. We anticipate the following outcomes:

  • Attendees will be presented with a lunchtime talk on reproductive justice by Dr. Alessandra Jungs de Almeida, Research Affiliate at MIT’s Data + Feminism Lab.
  • Participants will receive hands-on-training in editing and developing Wikipedia entries from Wikimedia Ireland.
  • Small groups will collectively develop topics, compile appropriate references and links, and develop a series of topical entries for Ireland. 
  • New content on reproductive justice in Ireland will be added to Wikipedia.

DARIAH-IE Visits UCC [March 19th, 2026]

Save the Date ! DARIAH-IE visits UCC on March 19th, 2026

DARIAH-IE will be continuing our visits to Irish HEIs with a trip to University College Cork on March 19th. We are looking forward to meeting with colleagues engaged in digitally-enabled arts and humanities activities across the university – from practitioners, researchers, academics to those involved in research support services.

The visit to UCC will include an Open Session with a short presentation on DARIAH and Ireland’s national node DARIAH-IE, followed by a Q&A with Joan Murphy (DARIAH-IE National Manager) and Prof Jennifer Edmond (DARIAH-IE National Coordinator). During the Q&A attendees will be given the opportunity to discuss their needs and wants from the national node in a relaxed and informal way. A number of smaller meetings will also take place.

The Masterclass Series continues with 

Aisling Phelan, an Irish multidisciplinary artist exploring digital doubles, speculative futures and human-machine interactions and entanglements.

In this masterclass, Aisling will present an overview of her artistic practice, tracing the research, processes, and technological explorations that shape her work in relation to identity, corporeality, and digital representation. Drawing on recent research into DeepFakes, doppelgangers, and robotics, the session will also invite participants to engage in speculative thinking around possible futures shaped by emerging technologies, using fiction and open-ended questioning as tools to reflect on contemporary technological anxieties.

Speaker Bio
Aisling Phelan is an Irish multidisciplinary artist exploring digital doubles, speculative futures and human-machine interactions and entanglements. Through 3D animation, AI, video, sculpture, and live interactive technologies, her work explores what it means to be human in an era of rapid technological advancement and pervasive algorithmic influence. 

Drawing from a transhumanist and speculative fiction perspective, Phelan explores how far we are willing to go in the pursuit of self-optimisation and the potential costs of such advances. Fusing the intimate with the artificial, her practice confronts the seductive promise of transcendence and enhancement, creating space for reflection on the role of current digital infrastructures in shaping how we understand ourselves and others.

Immersive Storytelling in 360° [Feb 12, online & in person, @12:00 GMT]

Immersive Storytelling in 360°

This 2 hour workshop will explore 360° storytelling processes. Drawing on the artist’s experiences with making 360° pieces in multiple languages and within different contexts, James will share what he has learned while referencing his work along with other international artists making work in this realm. No experience needed, this workshop is for anyone interested in telling stories, and how you might go about it in the digital space – touching on narrative structure, plot, character and the use of text and audio.

James Riordan is Artistic Director of Brú Theatre. His work in the digital space includes Ar Ais Arís (2020) – a merging of Irish language literature on immigration and VR, which recently toured to the US and Canada. In 2024 he directed No Tempo por Agua, A 360° VR piece for Portuguese company Teatro Do Silencio which premiered in Lisbon. Ologon, a 360° musical experience shot throughout Mayo premiered in 2021. 

He was Digital Artist in Residence with University of Galway’s Centre for Creative Technologies in 2024 and has presented his work and facilitated VR workshops for multiple companies including Prime Cut (Belfast) and Central School of Drama (London) and Galway International Arts Festival.

The iFrame project is a NORF-funded investigation into the support for research data management in Irish HEOs and RPOs, which will conclude with the production of a National Framework for supporting RMD in Ireland.

At this workshop, iFrame will present the collated findings from the individual investigations of RDM support conducted in several Irish HEOs so far.

Drawing on examples of good (and best) practice, they will discuss how to learn from one another across institutions and how to improve RDM support in all institutions and on a national level. The ideas and thoughts generated and discussed in this workshop will inform the development of the framework document.

Join artists Conor Maloney and John Conneely for an in-depth masterclass on Funeral for Ashes, an immersive installation honouring Ireland’s endangered ash woodlands. Blending TouchDesigner, Bitwig Studio, LiDAR, and photogrammetry, the work transforms ecological data and human movement into a living, responsive environment of sound and light.


In this session, the artists will unpack the creative and technical process behind the piece — from 3D scanning native trees to synchronising generative audio and real-time visuals — and discuss how digital art can serve as both ritual and environmental reflection.
